“When hearing of Tuscany most people think of olive groves, vineyards and alleys of cypresses which meander through gentle rolling hills. But the landscape is much more varied – and by far not as smooth as picture postcards try to make believe. The predominant part of the region is hilly, the northwest can even be described as mountainous, the southwest on the other hand especially along the coast of the Maremma is rather low as it used to be marshland. Today it is partly protected as a natural reserve.”

If you find the heat a bit too much on the beach of Versilia then we recommend a tour up to the Apuan Alps that tower up behind the coastal strip. On a clear day the more than 300 marble quarries of Carrara sparkle like snow in the sun. Michelangelo used this famous marble for the creation of his works of art. The best day for a visit is on a Sunday as there is less traffic along the tight roads and virtually no lorries which make the driving experience less challenging.
