Belgium is famous for its culinary specialities. It is not only renowned for its delicious chocolate and splendid pralines but also for its maritime delicacies and as being the birthplace of chips. On almost every corner you are able to find a chip shop that offers these golden treats in every possible way. Quite predictably the national dish of the Belgians is by the way blue mussels with chips. Belgian beer is also known around the globe. After all there are more than 300 breweries in this small Benelux country. Traditional beers are those fruit flavoured beers and strong abbey beers. After a long cycling tour in the summer the perfect refreshment is surely without a doubt a nicely chilled beer.
The perfect places for a vacation in Belgium are the coast and the Ardennes. The sea promises mainly relaxation and entertainment with beach resorts such as Bredene, De Haan, De Panne or Knokke Heist while the while the higher regions near to the German border are ideal for extensive hiking and cycling tours. Here the famous health resort Spa is located that has become the embodiment for recreation and relaxation referred to as so-called “Spas”. For motorsport enthusiasts surely more interesting than springs and baths is the legendary racing course Spa-Franchorchamps. This race course that winds through the Ardennes at a length of seven kilometres is the venue of the annual Belgian Grand Prix and a permanent fixture in the Formula 1 calendar. Another worthwhile destination is the region around the capital Brussels. Explore the metropolis and its sights like Manneken Pis or the Atomium. Also worth at least a day trip is the diamond city Antwerp which is the world’s main trading centre for precious stones. In addition to this Liège, Ghent and Bruges are very lovely and attractive cities that should be explored.
