Amongst lemon trees and olive groves

Lake Garda | Lake Garda looks like a sea amidst the mountains. Even Goethe praised the spectacular scenery during a stay in 1786: “How I wish my friends could be here with me for a moment so they could rejoice in this view in front of me. Tonight I could have been in Verona but this admirable natural scenery was still lying next to me. An exquisite spectacle, Lake Garda, which I did not want to miss and I was gloriously rewarded for my circuitous route.”

Until this day you are offered numerous spectacular panoramic views around Lake Garda. When standing in Riva del Garda at the northern bank of the lake and you let your gaze wander towards the south you will understand what Goethe so longingly meant. The deep blue water surface sparkles amidst steep and rugged mountain slopes surrounded by green hillsides and these only cut through occasionally by a white sailing boat. On your way to the southern bank you are spoilt for choice. There are scenic roads along the banks on both sides of the lake that lead through smaller and larger villages nestled up in the hillsides. The Gardesana Occidentale runs along the western embankment through Limone, Gargnano and Salo and passes lemon as well as olive groves which are spread out over the slopes. Driving along the other side of Gardesana Orientale you will mainly see olives growing on the hillsides which are the source of the excellent olive oil produced around Lake Garda. Especially the picturesque villages of Malcesine, Torri del Benaco and Garda are ideal for a short stroll through town. In the background ascends Monte Baldo – with more than 2,000 metre the highest mountain around the lake.

Driving further to the south the scenery becomes hilly and the rough rocks of the Alps disappear gradually. In the Po Valley the landscape is dominated by green and turquoise colours and here the lake is at its broadest without being confined by the corset of restrictive rock formations. On the south bank you are able to find the most important and well-known villages: Peschiera, Sirminone or Desenzano.

You can truly discover and experience a lot! There is way too much to list or mention here. Come and find out for yourself!

“For vacationers who are looking for a place away from the crowds, Cassone is ideal. The port with the colorful fishing boats is idyllic. It do not create large ferries, but only fishing boats or the Standing rowers. A little off from the port there is a small beach. To swim there, but you need necessarily slippers. Along the waterways a very nice walking (biking) leading the way, where there are a lot of banks. The small fishing museum (actually a small museum) at the harbor is very nice and well worthwhile. Nice is also a walk in the village to the church. There is, however, up steeply. The most necessary food (bread, wine, water, cheese, sausage, butter, noodles, ...) can be very close to the apartment to buy (at a very nice shopkeeper). There was (even now in the season) and daily fresh bread and German newspapers (eg "The Süddeutsche"). A larger supermarket is a few kilometers towards Bressone. Of course, the restaurant offer is limited in such a small place, but in fairly close proximity to the apartment at least we have four found which were now all already open (early April) and in which one could quite well and eat at reasonable prices.

One small problem is the parking situation. Approximately 100m from the apartment, although there is one, on the - now in the pre-season - was always plenty of space. With parking disc one may there but officially are only 60 minutes or you have a ticket draw (1.10 € per hour). The free / "park disk free" parking is much further away, and possibly you have to them the rather steep and narrow road to go up in the place. We leave our car in the (almost always empty) parking lot near the apartment, and not taking care of the parking disc. Once we did in the 8 days (fortunately only on the penultimate day) get a parking ticket (30 €).”

Gathered around the Scaliger castle and the Captain's Palace is the old town, with it's little port, quaint squares and cobbled streets animated with shops, bars and typical restaurants, Malcesine conserves its long standing origins and its fascinating charm. The medieval village, the landscape and nature melt in symbiosis with art: many are the events and exhibitions that give further value to the cultural aspect of Malcesine.

FROM WATER TO THE ROCK: BALDO...
Caressed by a constant temperate, healthy breeze, Malcesine gives emotional days of surf and sailing and magnificent walks in the hills and high mountains, passing from a rich vegetation of oleanders and olive trees, to a pure alpine landscape on the summit of Monte Baldo "Botanical Garden of Europe". During the winter, on reaching the Tratto Spino summit with the new cable car Malcesine - Monte Baldo, the ski slopes await guests who wish to enjoy themselves offering the possibility to downhill and alpine ski, snowboard, sledge or make excursions with snow shoes.

SPORT... AND ITS 4 SEASONS...
Malcesine offers an immense variation of opportunities for the sport loving tourist... sailing, windsurf, water ski, kite surf, diving, swimming, trekking, Nordic walking, mountain bike, parascending, climbing, alpine ski, snowboard and snowshoes.

an older medieval tower. Remnants of an Etruscan tomb have been found within the castle walls. The castle was fortified by the della Scala family who ruled the region throughout the 13th century.
Other sights include the pieve of St. Stephen (8th century), the church of Santa Maria di Navene (11th century)
In 1786, Goethe was questioned by the local magistrate on suspicion of being a spy while drawing sketches of the castle. The German writer recalled the incident in his report about the Italian Journey.
Interesting the peal of 5 bells of the parish of Cassone and the windmill.
Behind Malcesine rises the 2218 metres high Monte Baldo. A cable car with rotating cabins takes passengers to 1750 metres above sea level. From there the highest point can be accessed by walking a few kilometres to the south along the ridge.
