Switzerland comprises of three linguistic – and more or less cultural – autonomous parts. Whilst German is the main language in the North and East the South, especially the beautiful Ticino and parts of Grisons, is dominated by Italian. The entire western part of Switzerland between Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains is French-speaking. Due to these unique circumstances Swiss culture is an interesting mixture of German, Italian and French influences as well as the original ancient customs and traditions of the cantons.
Beyond that Switzerland is a very attractive holiday destination as one is able to enjoy a splendid holiday throughout the year in any part of the country. Not only the natural diversity of mountains, valleys, forests and high plains impress but this is complemented by a variety of touristic offers. For example one can enjoy a relaxing bathing or water sports holiday far away from the traditional coastal sea resorts at one of the many Swiss lakes such as Lake Lucerne, Lake Neuchâtel or Lake Zurich. The Jura Mountains, the Bernese Oberland as well as the High Alps offer countless possibilities for activity holidays full of hiking and climbing tours. In the mountainous regions one can find many trend sports such as rafting, paragliding and mountain biking. During the winter period Switzerland is transformed into a winter wonderland. Whether downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or snowboard – in the Alpine skiing regions around Matterhorn, Dufour Peak, Weisshorn and Piz Bernina everyone will find his or her dream destination for an entertaining and eventful skiing holiday. Especially fully equipped and furnished ski huts are ideal for winter vacations that usually offer enough space for several families travelling together. What could be nicer than relaxing in front of a crackling fire, enjoying an original Swiss cheese fondue or a Rösti (hash browns) after an eventful day out on the piste whilst the cold Alpine climate ensures that fresh snow is offered the next day.
