This is how holiday rental owners described Anghiari

Anghiari is a medieval village that dominates from the top of the hill, below the Tiber valley and the river Tiber. It is located in Tuscany, Province of Arezzo, but borders with Umbria.

The country, famous for being the scene, during the Renaissance, of the battle between the Florentines and ...

Milan painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence, boasts of numerous awards: Orange Flag of the Touring Club, the title of "One of the most beautiful villages in Italy, "" Slow City "," City of Ceramics ", etc..

The medieval old town, surrounded by mighty walls, enjoy the view over the valley and is flanked by the ancient wayto the town of Sansepolcro, birthplace of Piero della Francesca and Luca Pacioli.

The countryside around Anghiari is equally beautiful and is dotted with churches and castles. Nearby is Lake Montedoglio, the nature reserve of the Mountains Rognosi with the large pine forest of Col di Paiolo. At the foot of Anghiari flows the river Tiber and you can make walking and cycling in the streets that run along the old gravel pits, now flooded.

Nearby you can visit Caprese, where born Michelangelo, Citerna, Monterchi, Sansepolcro and Città di Castello. Not far away the city of Arezzo.

Anghiari is an ideal starting point to visit Tuscany and Umbria, but also Romagna and the Marches.

The origins of Anghiari are very old. It looks typically medieval and is perched up on a hillside, looking out over the Tiber and Sovara valleys. If you look up at the town from the valley you can enjoy a wonderful view, but wandering in the streets of the old ...

town is even more delightful. Visitors can walk along the lanes and admire the traditional stone houses, stairways and attractive small squares which reflect the varied history of the town over the centuries.

Although the first settlement had a Roman origin, Anghiari became much more important during the middle ages because of it strategic position. Anghiari was named for the first time in a document dated 1048 which is still preserved in the archives at Città di Castello.

The monks of the Saint Romualdo Order were the first rulers of Anghiari. The most important period in the history of the town however, is connected with the Battle of Anghiari which was fought in the year 1440 between the Visconti armies from Milan and
those of Florence which were allied with the Pope. Machiavelli spoke about the battle in his Historiae fiorentinae and Leonardo da Vinci did a huge (short lived) fresco painting of it in Florence.

Every year at the end of April and the beginning of May there is an extensive craft fair within the walls of the picturesque medieval town. The Mostra Mercato dell'Artigianato della Valtiberina is both a market and exhibition of hand crafts where you can admire and buy artisan products such as wood, wrought iron, fabrics and foods that are made in the Tiber Valley. Nowadays Anghiari is also well known for the tradition of antique furniture restoring based on its famous school, Istituto d'Arte, where students are able to learn the art of restoration.

Anghiari can also offer a convivial atmosphere, for example Tovaglia a quadri (the checked tablecloth) takes place in il Poggiolino, one of the delightful little squares in Anghiari's old town during Ferragosto week (Ferragosto is on 15th August).

The inhabitants of the square and the actors of the Compagnia del Teatro Stabile di Anghiari "flavour" a delicious open-air dinner with a play or story told in four acts or "courses".

Typical Tuscany: Abundance of sights and day trips

Next to the picturesque landscape Tuscany impresses especially with its rich cultural and art historic heritage. There is much to see and discover – with its many famous cities leading the way: Especially Florence, the capital of Tuscany, impresses with its many important buildings such as the cathedrale, Ponte Vecchio over the river Arno, the Uffizi Gallery with the famous collection of paintings and the many Renaissance palaces of the Medici and other influential families.

Siena, Florence’s eternal “rival” offers a beautiful Gothic old city centre is not least famous for its long-standing university and Palio, the annual horse race which tajes place in the city centre. In Pisa most tourists are attracted by the Campanile, the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa at the Piazza del Miracoli. However the beautiful old town with its entwined alleys is also worth seeing.

The smaller cities San Gimignano, Volterra, Arezzo and Vinci are in a beautiful picturesque hilly setting. San Gimignano which is also known as “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” because of the towers that can be seen from far away have created an authentic historical cityscape which takes the visitor 500 years back in time. The insider’s tip is definitely the ice cream bar which sells the world’s best chocolate ice cream getting several awards in the process. In Vinci you can walk in the footsteps of the city’s renowned son – his first name was Leonardo. But also the less well known small towns and villages with markets and the one or other tourist attraction are worth a visit.

Agriturismo in Tuscany – Holiday home vacation in the countryside

Many of Tuscany’s traditional farms have been restored and converted into holiday accommodations. Agriturismo, which means loosely translated “holiday in the countryside” is a highlight for adults as well as for children who can play to one’s heart’s content on the wide ranging grounds of the farm. Usually these old farm and manor houses which are called rusticos are situated in idyllic landscapes such as the vineyards in Chianti or in the province Florence with great panorama views of the surrounding hills in Mugello or on the dark blue sea at the Maremma.

Holiday makers are not only offered the seclusion and open space for an individual vacation but also insights into the life of an Italian farmer. And with the ecologically produced local products from the farm shop or the weekly market in the next village one is able to prepare great traditional Italian dishes in the kitchen of the holiday home. Often these rusticos provide some extras such as a pool or an especially large terrace where one can enjoy a good glass of wine whilst watching the sun set.

Tuscany's coast: Bathing vacation at the Mediterranean
