“Rating refers to the end of the season in late September / early October. Then increasingly quiet and some shops and restaurants closed. Castro itself little interesting, Castell and Grotta Zinzulusa as attractions. Within 1 hour drive you can reach Otranto, Lecce, Leuca and also the Ionian coast with Gallipoli and the sandy beaches of the Ionian side.”

“There is little to do in the area for children in primary school age. There is a disco for older children. There are two supermarkets in the village. Not open on Sunday afternoon. Enough interesting places to visit in the area, along the coast but also inland. Cities such as Lecce and Maglie are worth a visit. Owning a car, also for daily groceries is indispensable. For sandy beaches should be ridden, but no more than 45 minutes.”

“In advance, we were in early June 2018 in Castro Marina, so the preseason and the place was still in deep sleep, or in preparation for the season. That is, many restaurants and shops were still closed. In Castro Marina almost exclusively tourist life takes place. Castro Vecchia offers atmosphere and everyday life with its old houses, church, village square, fort and archaeological museum. There you will also find well-stocked grocery stores. The location is well suited for trips to Lecce, d'Otranto and the surrounding area. It is recommended (if you do not arrive with your own car to book a rental car)”

This is how holiday rental owners described Castro in Apulien

Castro , Pearl of Salento, with its gentle atmosphere enveloping, generous nature, its beautiful sea, the beautiful scenery, is one of the most beautiful marinas of Salento
Castro is a coastal town in Salento, on the Adriatic side. It is 15 km from Otranto, Lecce from 45 , 50 from ...

Gallipoli and 25 from Leuca. It stands in the middle of a gorgeous arc of coastline from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca. The inhabitants are about 2500, but in the summer time is populated by tourists attracted to the town. Those arriving in Castro jump right into a nice size that makes you forget the stress and chaos of the city, rocked by emotions that follow each other and involve both soul and body.
We can consider this town divided into two distinct parts: on the one hand, Castro Marina, where there is also the port near which you can see the small caves dug which serve as warehouses for fishermen; the other Castro Superiore, village of ancient origin in a panoramic position on the sea on a long hilly area. It is said that to create the village were Cretans, then called Castrum Minervae by the Romans, becoming an important centre throughout the middle ages as a bishopric in 1179 to 1537, in spite of the current small size. Sixteenth-century fortifications, still visible for long stretches, they confirm not only the ancient importance of the place, but also his need to defend itself from the frequent pirate raids, no doubt facilitated by the presence of a comfortable and safe. So, if the tourist facilities are concentrated especially on the lower part, the major historical and artistic qualities are on the high side. Here we find the Castle erected in the second half of the 16th century on the ruins of another even more ancient, then rebuilt in the following centuries until the 18th century, and is the Cathedral, originally from the 12th century and subsequently changed over time. This church preserves Romanesque structure in the façade, in the transept and the side door, while on the left side are incorporated the remains of a 10th-century Byzantine Church originally a Greek cross. On the right is attached to the old Episcopal Palace of the XV century. Inside holds ancient paintings by artisti salentini from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century including a picture of the Pietà dated 16th century.
In 2009, unfortunately, an abandoned building site in the town's main square (Piazza Dante) has collapsed, but has completed the removal of rubble and is now almost completed the reconstruction of the façade of the buildings that will restore to Piazza Dante its characteristic look.
Even the surrounding Castro takes your breath away: it is in these places that the blue of the sea and the green of the vegetation, come together to present the most varied possible locations. With its famous caves, rocky peaks, to waters rich of fauna and flora, paradise for divers. From the characteristic medieval town rich in history, at the port. From the tasty cuisine to entertainment. All this makes Castro a truly magical place.

Castro is an old fishing village, which is distributed in two parts: the upper part of the
village is the old city, Castro Alta, with the Aragonese Castle and the old church Madre Annunziata, and the lower part of the village, Castro Marina,
with the old small port. The tourism ...

in Castro is more sophisticated and less popular, but in this small village you will find all the services.
The Salento has many opportunities for art and nature lovers.
In Castro, next to the cathedral and the castle, you can visit the impressive cave of
Zinzulusa; the cave is located at the south of Castro Alta.
30 minutes north from Castro you will find the village of Corigliano d'Otranto with its famous castle built in the 14th century.
A few kilometers from Corigliano you can visit the beautiful town of Maglie and it's very relaxing a walk in the old town with its many shops.
Ideal for an afternoon shopping.
Not far from Maglie and Corigliano you can drive to reach Galatina and
admire the wonderful frescoes of the Basilica of Santa Caterina.
In Otranto (40 minutes from Castro Marina) you will find the Castello Aragonese and the
fascinating old town.
In Salento you must visit its most important city: Lecce, “the queen of the baroque”.
To visit this beautiful city, the trip is worth.
Lecce is about 50 minutes by car from Castro Marina. To enjoy all the beauty of the baroque in its charming old town you need at least one full day.
To admire an unique landscape, you can drive from Castro along the coast road to the south to Santa Maria di Leuca, which is the heel of Italy.
Then you leave the Adriatic coast and reach the Ionic coast.
In this part of Salento we recommend to visit Ugento, a beautiful old village. Here you can walk through the narrow streets around the cathedral and the castle.
Driving to the north along the coast road from Ugento you reach in few minutes
Gallipoli, a wonderful old fishing village.
