show more of its natural and climatic features, it is remarkable by long, white sand and pebble beaches, lush pine forests and olive groves that lie between the azure blue sea and monumental slope of Mount Biokovo, which extends along the Riviera. Situated under its cliffs and slopes are old villages, with preserved old architecture, which keep long-forgotten scents and flavors of homemade cheese, ham, wine and herb brandy, and along the coast rise modern tourist towns with new, attractive hotels, houses, villas, harmoniously incorporated into the old fishing and farming villages.
Makarska Riviera is one of the sunniest parts of the Mediterranean with an average of 2700 hours per year. Long, hot summers, hours and hours of uninterrupted sunshine, warm crystal clear waters and a gently sloping shoreline make it a suitable destination for family vacations.
show more merchants and now for yachts, sailing boats and leisure boats for tourists. This helped it to become an important trading harbour, especially at the time of the Venetian and Turkish occupation. Today there are several boats a day from here to Sumartin on the island of Brač. On summer evenings the harbour is full of yachts and leisure boats and Kačić Square in the centre of town is overflowing with young people enjoying the entertainment and cultural programmes. The later it is at night, the more vibrant it gets on the seafront promenade (Riva) in Makarska, and the fuller the cafés, restaurants and discos. The best way to get to know the history of the town is to visit the Franciscan monastery, which recently celebrated its 500th anniversary. In its rooms you can admire the picture gallery, the library, a unique malacological museum (dedicated to the study and preservation of molluscs) and the Institute for Mountains and Sea. On Kačić Square there is also the St. Marcus Church. On the north side there are now the Gojak gallery in the old school, the municipal library, the music school and the headquarters of the Makarska Riviera broadcasting station. On the short there are the Municipal Museum and the church of St. Philip. In St. Petrus’s park there is the restored church of the same name, from which there is a wonderful view over the town, the great Biokovo mountain and the open sea.
