Portugal: So where do you want to go?
Every year the Algarve attracts thousands of tourists from all over Europe. Along the beaches one can splash around in the sun and cities such as Albufeira, Portimão and Faro are great places for shopping, taking a stroll and lingering. Another feature of this region is the large amount of golf courses.
Portugal’s other regions though also promise entertainment, relaxation and most of all lots of sun. At the Atlantic coast of the Costa de Lisboa for example one can spend a great holiday at the seaside. The same is true for Costa de Prata and Costa Verde that are located further north. Next to the numerous beaches and small villages the major cities such as Lisbon, Aveiro or Porto are equally enticing. Further in the heartland of Portugal you can explore some beautiful landscapes. The north of Portugal and parts of central Portugal are shaped by mountains with lush vegetation and river valleys are traditionally home to wine growing. The south, especially the area around Alentejo, is hillier with corn fields, olive groves and cork oak characteristic for this region.
Madeira and the Azores – holidays on the islands
Not only the mainland but also the Atlantic islands of the Azores and the beautiful Madeira with its smaller neighbouring island Porto Santo are attractive destinations. Due to its location close to the African coast the flower island Madeira offers a subtropical climate and enchanting landscape. Especially in the spring a scented sea of flowers as well as fruit and vegetable plants cover the whole island and turning it into a real paradise. The volcano islands of the Azores located in the Atlantic Ocean are an equally unique and beautiful place. Due to their isolation and tranquillity they offer a lot of space for individual vacationers and entice with their stunning beautiful landscape and unique vegetation.
Journey by plane recommended
The easiest way to reach your Portugal holiday is by taking a plane. International airports with regular scheduled and chartered flights are Lisbon, Porto and Faro. Once you have reached your travel destination it is recommended to rent a car in order to reach the holiday house and also to retain your independence in order to be able to go on trips.
If you decide to take your own car then the journey will be quite long and take you through France as well as the North of Spain. The best route is through Galicia and from there over the Portuguese border in direction of Porto. The Portuguese motorways are all in a relatively good state though most sections are subject to a toll that will swiftly have a negative impact on your vacation budget.
Also Madeira and the Azores have airports and can be reached easily. However direct flights to the Azores are rather scarce. Therefore one will have to calculate at least one stopover or a change of flight.
The most popular time
... for a holiday house vacation in Portugal is summer. However one has to consider that during July and September temperatures can be very high in some areas. Ideal temperatures are usually reached during spring and autumn when it is not too hot but still warm enough for a relaxing beach vacation. Even in winter some regions have very mild temperatures like the Algarve which is influenced by the North African climate. A huge advantage when travelling in the off season is that one can rent many holiday homes for a very good price. So for little money you can splash in the pool of your holiday home whilst those back home have to deal with the unpleasant wind and rain. On Madeira you can enjoy an almost everlasting spring. The island as well as the Canary Islands benefit from their geographical location close to the African coast and the subtropical climate.
